The Nursery Department aims to work towards the Early
Learning Goals for the Foundation Stage as defined and set down by the
Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (Q.C.A.). We are OFSTED inspected and
registered with the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) to redeem
Nursery Grants, ensuring that we are providing high standards of pre-school
education for our children. OFSTED 2005 rated our
Nursery among the top 8 in Sussex with top marks in
every category. This high standard was confirmed by the 2007 OFSTED inspection which rated all
aspects as being good.A copy of the report is available at the
school, or

To
create a relaxed, family atmosphere in which a
child's natural eagerness to learn is encouraged.
To treat each child as an individual whose abilities
and talents are developed.
To ensure success and the growth of confidence for
each child.
To extend the able and support those with
difficulties.
To develop social awareness and a respect for
tolerance, courtesy, self-discipline and the rights of others
The six areas of learning defined by the DfEE and SCAA are covered by our curriculum and promote early literacy, numeracy
and the development of personal and social skills, as well as knowledge and
understanding of the environment.

1. Personal and Social Development
Children are encouraged to work together and
independently, to share with, help and consider the feelings of others, both
adults and children. They are taught morals values, respect for themselves and
the environment. They are helped to develop concentration and perseverance. |
|
2.Language and Literacy
Children have frequent and numerous
opportunities to speak and listen. We encourage them to become confident and
articulate when expressing their views, but they must also listen to those of
others. Their vocabulary is increased through discussion, stories and drama.
Through many practical and fun activities,
children are introduced to phonic sounds and letter recognition and are
encouraged to begin forming letters correctly. Once a child has mastered most of
the sounds, has an understanding of how printed words and pictures convey
meaning and is considered by teaching staff to be ready to begin word
recognition, then the words from the first level of reading from the Ginn 360
scheme will be gradually introduced.
The child will slowly build up a bank of
words which he /she recognises and can make into sentences with the help of
staff. This is done as a game and at no time is a child pressurised or
forced into these activities. At the same time, he /she is encouraged to begin
writing words, phrases and sentences.

|
3. Mathematics
Children will be given an extensive range of
practical tasks which help them to match, sort, sequence, count and order
numbers up to 10. They will hear and use mathematical language such as
"longer, shorter, heavier and lighter" etc. They will sing number
rhymes and play number games, solve practical number problems using articles
around them. They will learn to recognise the first basic shapes and to
recognise written numbers also. When their pencil control is beginning to
develop, they will begin to write numbers. They will measure length, height,
weight and capacity in non standard units.
