Although we follow the basic framework of the national curriculum, we are not bound by it and can tailor learning for our children’s aptitudes and enthusiasms.
Children at Charters Ancaster have specialist teachers from Reception onwards: in their first year, they have Singing, Music, French, Science, Forest School, Swimming and PE led by specialists, as well as access to peripatetic instrumental tuition and participation in Hastings Festival to develop speaking and listening and confidence.
From Year 3, children have specialist teaching for
- Design Technology
- PE and Games (classes have four lessons a week)
- Swimming (Autumn and Summer terms)
- Latin (Spring term)
- Forest School
- Chess (Spring term)
We have the broadest curriculum for children this age of any local independent school: this was noted by our recent ISI Inspection. We challenge children through activities that other schools do not provide in the curriculum – like two modern languages plus Latin and taught Chess lessons.
Teaching by specialists ensures the highest quality provision, and this shows in teachers’ passion for what they teach and children’s engagement with their lessons.
We have fun, in an enriched, stimulating environment.
We use the outdoors as much as possible. From September 2016, all children have had timetabled Forest School in our own grounds.
We have fun whole-school events like Conkers Championship, Pancake Races, Bake Off, referenda, subject weeks, and loads of educational visits and other “Wow!” experiences.
